CHAPTER NINETEEN
Max took Callan into the city to help him find Imron, his friend whom he believed had tattooed at least some of the kids. With more than a hundred tattoo parlors in the New Orleans area, their work was cut out for them.
Both men had tattoos up and down their arms, although Callanâs were far more eclectic and colorful. Spending time in the Army, heâd perfected his art, tattooing many of his fellow soldiers for a side income. Always doodling new images, learning from others, even the men in the motorcycle shop. He often saw things that others did not, which made him not only a great tattoo artist but a great operative.
âLetâs try this one,â said Callan. âI used to know the owner. A real dick, but he did a good job with his customers.â
The bell above the door rang, and a voice from the back yelled out, âwelcome â be with you in a minute.â
âNo rush,â said Callan. They took a seat, waiting for someone to come and speak to them. It was more than twenty minutes later that a man appeared from the back.
âHey there. What can I do for yâall?â he asked.
âSorry, is this not Duckâs shop any longer?â asked Callan.
âNo. Duck died two years ago. The cigarettes finally caught up with him. Iâm Mallard.â
âMallard?â smirked Max. âRelated to Duck?â The man laughed, shaking his head.
âYou would think so, but no. Just unlucky with names. You guys look pretty tatted up. What do you want?â
âActually, do you have time to talk?â asked Callan.
âGive me ten minutes. My client is getting dressed, and let me check him out.â
The client came out, his shorts rolled up to his groin. On his thigh was a massive tattoo of a shark biting what one could only think were his nuts. It was positioned just below the groin line, the sharkâs mouth wide open. Callan smirked, nodding his appreciation for the work. It wasnât his kind of thing, but it looked good.
âGotta give the wife a few hints,â said the young man. âGirl will do anything but suck my dick.â
âUh, yeah, but youâve got a shark, with teeth, opening his mouth. Arenât you worried sheâll bite?â asked Max.
âThatâs what I told him,â said Mallard, taking the manâs money. He just laughed, leaving the men to their conversation. âIâm free for another forty-five minutes. What can I help you with?â
âI own my own shop south of here. I used to be off the Square and had a guy working for me, Imron. Just wondered if you know of him or have heard of him.â Mallard immediately leaned back in his chair, staring at the two men.
âDid we say something wrong?â asked Max.
âNot wrong exactly,â said Mallard, rubbing his jaw. âImron has been bouncing around this last year. Not sure what happened, but some chick at a shop he was working at in Kenner claimed he was feeling her up when he was tattooing her ass.â
âImron? Thatâs not the guy I know,â said Callan.
